Hari Inovasi Kebangsaan @ Melaka 2026 (HIK@M 2026), organised by the Melaka State Government, was successfully held with Multimedia University (MMU) as the host for this year’s edition. The RICE UTeM-Melaka Collaboration Management Centre (RICE) also participated as a strategic partner of the programme, which is now entering its third year.

Themed “Generating Innovative Solutions Towards a Prosperous Community,” HIK@M 2026 brought together participants from various higher education institutions (HEIs), agencies, industries and schools to showcase innovative ideas and solutions with the potential to benefit society. This year’s edition also introduced a new preschool category to nurture a culture of creativity and innovation from the earliest stages of education.

UTeM submitted a total of nine entries in the HEI category and successfully secured two awards, further highlighting the university community’s ability to develop technology-driven innovations that are relevant and impactful.

MediLink – High-Availability Hybrid Cloud Electronic Health Records Platform for Malaysian Clinics secured Second Place. The project, developed by Yashpreet Singh Gill A/L Nelvinder Singh under the supervision of Ts. Mohd Nazrien Bin Zaraini, introduces an electronic health records (EHR) platform based on a hybrid cloud architecture that enables clinics to continue operating even during internet disruptions. MediLink also integrates patient registration via MyKad, AI-powered triage, pharmacy management and local payment methods.

Meanwhile, PineGuard, an innovation by Vincent Teoh Chia Win under the supervision of Ts. Dr. Noorrezam Bin Yusop, secured Third Place. The project develops an AI- and Internet of Things (IoT)-based smart pineapple crop monitoring system to help small-scale farmers monitor crop conditions in real time, detect diseases at an early stage and receive automated alerts through a mobile application. This innovation has the potential to reduce crop losses, increase farmers’ productivity and income, while supporting sustainable agriculture and food security.

These achievements reflect UTeM’s commitment to strengthening a culture of innovation and developing technological solutions that contribute to societal well-being and national development. The involvement of the RICE UTeM-Melaka Collaboration Management Centre (RICE) as a strategic partner of HIK@M 2026 further strengthens collaboration among the university, the Melaka State Government and stakeholders in advancing the state’s innovation ecosystem.

The SmarTram project is led by Dr. Suziana binti Ahmad alongside team members Dr. Haslinah, Puan Syuhada, Encik Mohd Afdhal, and Assoc. Prof. Rostam Affendi. The project focuses on the development and application of an IoT-based (Internet of Things) monitoring and environmental control system for mushroom houses.

Among the key technologies introduced is a real-time temperature monitoring system that allows environmental conditions inside the mushroom house to be monitored more systematically and effectively. The temperature data obtained helps growers identify environmental changes that could affect the growth and yield of oyster mushrooms. To assist in regulating temperature inside the mushroom house, a water sprinkler system was installed on top of the roof. This system functions to help lower and control the ambient temperature, particularly during hot weather conditions. Additionally, blowers and fans were installed to improve ventilation and ensure the mushroom house environment remains optimal for growth.

Led by Dr. Ahamed Fayeez Bin Tuani Ibrahim as Chief Executive Officer, this project focuses on developing a smart agriculture system based on LoRa (Long Range) technology to help women, including single mothers, in Kg Pulau increase household income through hydroponic farming. A total of 8 targeted participants, including several single mothers, are directly involved in the project, which combines eight sets of 204-hole multi-tiered hydroponic systems with IoT monitoring systems to ensure more efficient and sustainable crop management.

Throughout the visit, the implementation team received strong support from the residents of Kampung Pulau, who demonstrated close cooperation and warm acceptance toward the project's execution. The support provided by the local community reflects the positive relationship established between UTeM and the village community throughout the project, serving as a key catalyst for its future smooth execution and success.

The UTeM-Melaka RICE Collaboration Management Centre (RICE) participated in organizing the De’FiestaKo@SGB Co-Curricular Carnival held at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Ghaffar Baba.

This involvement aimed to expose secondary school students to the fundamentals of Arduino programming using Reka Edu, while inspiring them to delve deeper into STEM disciplines. Throughout the programme, participants demonstrated great interest and provided very positive feedback regarding the activities conducted.
