Empowering the Livelihoods of the Berangan Enam Community, Umbai, through Smart Fertigation Technology

Project Title: Empowering the Livelihoods of the Berangan Enam Community, Umbai, through Smart Fertigation Technology

We are pleased to announce that the Handover Ceremony of the IoT and Smart Fertigation System under the Public University Community Empowerment Programme (Komuniti@UniMADANI) was successfully held with the following details:

This project aims to empower the local economy and improve the living standards of the Berangan Enam community in Umbai through the implementation of smart agricultural technology based on the Internet of Things (IoT). The smart fertigation system enables irrigation and fertilisation activities to be carried out more systematically, while helping the community monitor crops more efficiently.

This initiative focuses on the local community, particularly the B40 income group and homemakers, by creating opportunities to generate supplementary income through agricultural activities. In addition, the crops produced have the potential to serve as a source of food supply for the local community.

The adoption of smart fertigation technology is also expected to help the community overcome several agricultural challenges, including time constraints, limited technical knowledge, and difficulties in continuously monitoring crops, particularly among residents who engage in farming on a part-time basis.

The implementation of this project also supports Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1): No Poverty, through efforts to strengthen economic capacity and expand income-generating opportunities within the community.

The successful implementation of this project reflects the commitment and collaboration of the project team, led by PM Dr. Imran bin Mohd Ibrahim, together with the following project members:

UTeM Joins National Science Week 2026 – Southern Zone as a Strategic Partner

Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) continues to strengthen its role in fostering a culture of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) by serving as a strategic partner for the National Science Week (MSN) 2026 Carnival – Southern Zone, held from 9 to 10 August 2026 at the UTeM Chancellor Hall. The two-day carnival was organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) in collaboration with UTeM, the National Science Centre (PSN), the National Planetarium, and the Melaka State Government, serving as an important platform to bring science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) closer to the community, particularly the younger generation.

The two-day carnival received an encouraging response, attracting more than 6,000 participants, including students and pupils from over 50 schools across Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Johor. A variety of interactive and hands-on learning activities were provided, giving participants the opportunity to explore the world of science and technology through direct experiences. The opening ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Chang Lih Kang, and was attended by the Melaka State Executive Councillor for Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication, Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan; Professor Dr. Mohd Rizal bin Salleh, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), representing the Vice-Chancellor of UTeM; as well as university management, agency and industry representatives, educators and students.

Through coordination by the RICE UTeM-Melaka Collaboration Management Centre (RICE), one of the key activities organised by UTeM through its Teaching Factory was the Melaka Drone Challenge 2026, which provided participants with exposure to drone technology and its applications. The STEM Battle was also organised as a challenge-based activity that encouraged participants to apply their STEM knowledge, creativity and problem-solving skills. In addition, UTeM’s research products were also showcased throughout the carnival.

The carnival also featured the Nuclear Advocacy Programme, themed “Nuclear for the People”, which provided participants with insights into the diverse applications of nuclear technology, including in healthcare, agriculture and everyday life. The interactive learning approach throughout the carnival also enabled participants to engage directly with researchers, academics and experts in the fields of science and technology.

UTeM’s involvement as a strategic partner of MSN 2026 Southern Zone reflects the university’s commitment to strengthening the STEM and STI ecosystem while nurturing a generation that is creative, innovative and technologically literate. Programmes such as the Melaka Drone Challenge and STEM Battle further reinforce UTeM’s role in bringing technology closer to the community and supporting efforts to develop STEM talent to meet the nation’s future needs.

UTeM Clinches Two Awards at Hari Inovasi Kebangsaan @ Melaka 2026

Hari Inovasi Kebangsaan @ Melaka 2026 (HIK@M 2026), organised by the Melaka State Government, was successfully held with Multimedia University (MMU) as the host for this year’s edition. The RICE UTeM-Melaka Collaboration Management Centre (RICE) also participated as a strategic partner of the programme, which is now entering its third year.

Themed “Generating Innovative Solutions Towards a Prosperous Community,” HIK@M 2026 brought together participants from various higher education institutions (HEIs), agencies, industries and schools to showcase innovative ideas and solutions with the potential to benefit society. This year’s edition also introduced a new preschool category to nurture a culture of creativity and innovation from the earliest stages of education.

UTeM submitted a total of nine entries in the HEI category and successfully secured two awards, further highlighting the university community’s ability to develop technology-driven innovations that are relevant and impactful.

MediLink – High-Availability Hybrid Cloud Electronic Health Records Platform for Malaysian Clinics secured Second Place. The project, developed by Yashpreet Singh Gill A/L Nelvinder Singh under the supervision of Ts. Mohd Nazrien Bin Zaraini, introduces an electronic health records (EHR) platform based on a hybrid cloud architecture that enables clinics to continue operating even during internet disruptions. MediLink also integrates patient registration via MyKad, AI-powered triage, pharmacy management and local payment methods.

Meanwhile, PineGuard, an innovation by Vincent Teoh Chia Win under the supervision of Ts. Dr. Noorrezam Bin Yusop, secured Third Place. The project develops an AI- and Internet of Things (IoT)-based smart pineapple crop monitoring system to help small-scale farmers monitor crop conditions in real time, detect diseases at an early stage and receive automated alerts through a mobile application. This innovation has the potential to reduce crop losses, increase farmers’ productivity and income, while supporting sustainable agriculture and food security.

These achievements reflect UTeM’s commitment to strengthening a culture of innovation and developing technological solutions that contribute to societal well-being and national development. The involvement of the RICE UTeM-Melaka Collaboration Management Centre (RICE) as a strategic partner of HIK@M 2026 further strengthens collaboration among the university, the Melaka State Government and stakeholders in advancing the state’s innovation ecosystem.

COMMUNITY PROJECT SITE VISIT UNDER THE UniMADANI COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMME 2025: ENHANCING OYSTER MUSHROOM CULTIVATION (SmarTram) THROUGH SMART TECHNOLOGY @ KRT RUMAH BANDA HILIR, MELAKA

The SmarTram project is led by Dr. Suziana binti Ahmad alongside team members Dr. Haslinah, Puan Syuhada, Encik Mohd Afdhal, and Assoc. Prof. Rostam Affendi. The project focuses on the development and application of an IoT-based (Internet of Things) monitoring and environmental control system for mushroom houses.

Among the key technologies introduced is a real-time temperature monitoring system that allows environmental conditions inside the mushroom house to be monitored more systematically and effectively. The temperature data obtained helps growers identify environmental changes that could affect the growth and yield of oyster mushrooms. To assist in regulating temperature inside the mushroom house, a water sprinkler system was installed on top of the roof. This system functions to help lower and control the ambient temperature, particularly during hot weather conditions. Additionally, blowers and fans were installed to improve ventilation and ensure the mushroom house environment remains optimal for growth.

COMMUNITY PROJECT SITE VISIT UNDER THE UniMADANI COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMME 2025

Led by Dr. Ahamed Fayeez Bin Tuani Ibrahim as Chief Executive Officer, this project focuses on developing a smart agriculture system based on LoRa (Long Range) technology to help women, including single mothers, in Kg Pulau increase household income through hydroponic farming. A total of 8 targeted participants, including several single mothers, are directly involved in the project, which combines eight sets of 204-hole multi-tiered hydroponic systems with IoT monitoring systems to ensure more efficient and sustainable crop management.

Throughout the visit, the implementation team received strong support from the residents of Kampung Pulau, who demonstrated close cooperation and warm acceptance toward the project's execution. The support provided by the local community reflects the positive relationship established between UTeM and the village community throughout the project, serving as a key catalyst for its future smooth execution and success.
