Serkam Community Rehabilitation and Gymnasium Centre

23 August 2025 marked a significant milestone with the official opening of the Serkam State Constituency (DUN) Community Rehabilitation and Gymnasium Centre.

The ceremony was officiated by YB Datuk Haji Zaidi Attan, State Assemblyman for Serkam, with strong support from the Jasin District Office, Putra Hospital, PERKESO, the Melaka State Health Department (JKN Melaka), and the Serkam Community Paramedics. We were also honoured by the presence of Datuk Rahizi, Jasin District Officer.

The positive feedback from guests clearly reflects the potential of this initiative to make a meaningful impact on the local community, particularly the B40 income group, by improving access to healthcare and physiotherapy services.

The Serkam Community Rehabilitation and Gymnasium Centre was established through the 2024 UniMADANI Grant from the Ministry of Finance Malaysia. The project was led by Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Mariam Md Ghazaly, with the involvement of 10 UTeM staff members from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FTKE), Faculty of Industrial and Manufacturing Technology and Engineering (FTKIP), Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Technology (FTKM), Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FTMK), and RICE, as well as Mechatronics students from FTKE.

Interestingly, establishing this centre was not part of the grant's original key performance indicators (KPIs). It began with a simple “what if” idea. Through hard work, perseverance, and dedication, that idea has now become a reality.

At UTeM, we are truly grateful and proud to have contributed to the establishment of Melaka's first Community Rehabilitation and Gymnasium Centre. This achievement demonstrates the power of the Quintuple Helix collaboration involving JAPERUN Serkam, UTeM, the Jasin District Office, Putra Hospital, PERKESO, the Melaka State Health Department, the Serkam Community Paramedics, and the local community.

This initiative is a clear example of how university research, industry collaboration, community engagement, and government partnerships can be translated into practical solutions that directly benefit society.
