KOMUNITI@UNIMADANI PROGRAMME: UTeM 3D-PRINTED PROSTHETIC LEG DELIVERY CEREMONY

Melaka, 18 February 2025 – The UTeM 3D-Printed Prosthetic Leg Delivery Ceremony was held at Samsung IoT, Technology Campus, UTeM, under the Public University Community Empowerment Programme (Komuniti@UniMADANI), sponsored by the Ministry of Finance Malaysia (MOF). The project was led by Mr. Mohammad Rafi bin Omar from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Technology (FTKM), UTeM.

The ceremony was officiated by YB Datuk Fairul Nizam bin Roslan, State Executive Councillor for Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication, together with YB Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem, Deputy State Executive Councillor for Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication. Also in attendance were Associate Professor Datuk Dr. Sabri bin Mohamad Sharif, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni); Professor Ts. Dr. Effendi Mohamad, Director of the RICE UTeM-Melaka Collaboration Management Centre; and industry representative Kedidi Global Sdn. Bhd.

The project utilises 3D scanning and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3D printing technologies to produce prosthetic legs that are lightweight, durable, and comfortable, tailored to the specific needs of each recipient.

A total of seven prosthetic legs were presented to seven selected recipients from various districts across Melaka, particularly individuals who had not received assistance through PERKESO (Social Security Organisation). The recipients were Yuhaida Binti Md Yusoff and Zawaiah Binti Idris from Jasin; Saleha Binti Saleh, Muhammad Azam Bin Ibrahim, and Roszila Binti Mohtar from Alor Gajah; and Mohd Zamri Bin Manan and Abdul Aziz Bin Othman from Melaka Tengah.

With these prosthetic legs, the recipients can enjoy greater comfort in their daily lives and have improved opportunities to earn a living through occupations that require mobility, including entrepreneurship, agriculture, and technical and skilled work. This technology developed by UTeM researchers demonstrates that university research and teaching can extend beyond academia to make a meaningful contribution to public well-being, particularly for those in need.

RICE UTeM-Melaka would like to express its sincere appreciation to everyone involved in making this programme a success. We look forward to continuing our collaborations and developing initiatives that bring meaningful benefits to the community.

Thank you.
